This is a collection of correspondence mainly between the Leslie brothers, George, William, Patrick, Walter and Thomas, and their parents. They describe in detail life and conditions in the colonies, the running of their various properties (mainly on the Darling Downs), Patrick's financial losses, and their contact with the Macarthur family (George married Emmeline Macarthur and Patrick married Catherine Macarthur, both daughters of Hannibal Macarthur.) The collection includes a considerable volume of correspondence between various members of the Leslie and Macarthur families. Other correspondents include Hugh Gordon, Ernest Elphinstone Dalrymple and Mary Anne and Patrick Davidson.

Patrick Leslie emigrated from Scotland in the 1830s. He and his two brothers, Walter and George, were the first squatters to occupy land on the Darling Downs. Patrick married Kate McArthur, daughter of Hannibal Hawkins McArthur. The Leslies were the leading Darling Downs identities, taking an active part in politics.
